Windows and Mirrors with Carol Matas and Kathie MacIssac
Presented by the Pembina Escarpment Reading Council
Carol will do two presentations. In hour one, Pieces Of The Past, a Dear Canada title, for middle grade children. It is the story of a Jewish orphan who arrives in Winnipeg as a refugee after World War II. Carol will discuss writing historical fiction, what is involved in the research, and the importance of topics like The Holocaust and how to approach difficult topics in the classroom. In the second hour, Carol will contrast and compare writing historical fiction vs science fiction using her most recent title, Cloning Miranda, a YA title. She will discuss the themes of the novel and how science fiction can be used to explore “big ideas” in the classroom. There will be a question and answer time in each session. Books will be available on site.
Social Media & the Library
Is there really a point to using social media in your classroom or library? YES!
Kathie will discuss different platforms and how to best use them to enhance literacy in your classroom or library.
For the Love of Reading: Using Social Media to Connect to the Literary Community
Kathie will share her experiences using social media outside the library, the connections and community she’s built to support her love of MG fiction. It will be a session filled with booktalking, name dropping, recommendation sharing, and practical advice for building your own network of like-minded readers.
